Look at that water there
0:18
Hey welcome back to the channel, it's Jesse here from BC Fishing Journal
0:21
We're out at first light, actually just sunrise as you can see and we're going to go trolling
0:26
for salmon. Alright, let's get out there. Alright, we're just getting started here
0:35
So I'm going to use a, I've got a little purple onion flasher, a little hoochie, a white hoochie
0:42
which is one of my old faithfuls and you need to have the inline flasher for the hoochie
0:47
to create that action so that's mandatory. I've got my new setup, like I said the casting setup here, so I've got my PC Fun, it is an
1:00
Aloez reel and this is a casting setup. This is very similar to what I'd use on a river actually, not too far away, I'd use
1:09
this for float fishing. But yeah, we're going to use this, it's got some braid, it's got a top shot, a mono top
1:15
shot which is basically a strip of mono that connects to my leader line
1:19
So there's about 40 feet there and that's 30 pounds and then I've got braid on there
1:22
so that braid is really nice, it cuts through the water really well, it's got very little
1:27
stretch which is fantastic when you're fishing deeper. Now I'm just going to get my cannibal and my line connector in
1:36
So the mono connects to the line connector. Let's get going here. Let's see what we've got
1:40
I'm going to troll out to the spot. I'm going to troll out to the spot
1:49
Now let's start working the hook down. There we go, I've got my rod holder if I want but I'm just going to hold this for a little bit
1:57
I like to hold it just in case I feel any smolts. That's the nice thing about the braid too, is when smolts hit you can feel them a little
2:04
more easily than on the Islander. I wouldn't know when it's all mono
2:09
So much stretch that you don't even know you have a smolt on there. Alright, I've got a fish on, it's not big
2:13
It'd be great if it was a coho. I think it is a coho
2:19
Found a dummy flasher. Alright
2:36
I love it. That was quick. Got away from that coho in there
2:43
I think it's a coho. It looked like a... When he jumped there it looked like one
2:56
Let's have a look here. Oh, it's ok. Not bad
3:09
I think you're a coho. You're a small one, whatever you are
3:13
You might be legal. There's a little juvenile chinook. Oh, the lighting was playing a trick on me there
3:21
I'm going to wet my hands here. I thought I was going to bonk him
3:25
No, it's a little juvenile chinook. It's a hatchery chinook. There he is
3:29
He's coming back on his way. There's lots of them around there
3:33
Lots of little juveniles. Well, there we go. One on the board
3:39
Alright. Just as I was dropping, I got hit. I thought I popped the clip, but this is a better fish
3:46
This is a better fish. Good. Come on, baby. Come on. At 100 feet I popped him
3:59
It's hard to deal with this. I'm not used to this. What do we got down here
4:09
Anything decent? What do we got? Oh, could be a keeper. Could be a keeper
4:18
Could be a keeper. Could be a keeper. Could be a keeper
4:24
Could be a keeper. Could be a keeper. Could be. Let's get him
4:33
I don't know if he's done yet. Oh, yeah, he's a keeper
4:41
If he fits a coho, that'd be even better. Alright, the tricky part
4:52
Come on, baby. Oh, no. Don't do that. Oh, there he goes
5:00
Okay. Okay. Okay. There we go
5:10
Right in the neck. That's a good feeling. That's a good feeling
5:17
What do we got here? Oh. Oh. I'll give you a pink
5:25
You're a pink. Oh, you rotter. You rotter. That's a good sized pink, though
5:32
That's not bad. Popped out. So, 100 feet, there's some pinks. Oh, geez
5:44
There he is. Sorry I didn't get to give you a proper show, but I want to get rid of him anyway
5:50
Well, the good news is it was not a smalltower juvenile. I've been grinding
5:57
I'm having a hard time getting a bigger chinook, so I think they're just a little bit deeper
6:01
That's just a problem, but with the current going, it's hard to go past 100 feet on this thing
6:07
So, it's got to be salmon the way he's biting. He's running
6:11
He's running far. Where is this guy? Oh, yeah, it's a salmon
6:16
Alright, we got ourselves a jigs of little salmon here. What do we got
6:20
Is it a juvenile? Is it an adult? It looks like a chinook
6:29
It might be legal. Let's have a look here. That was pretty sweet
6:39
Alright, let's see here. This is a juvenile chinook. But super fun to catch him here
6:47
He took it and ran so fast that I couldn't catch the line. He came straight up. Alright
6:53
That's pretty cool. Alright, bud. We'll get you off there. Get your... Beautiful
7:04
Little spots, eh? Oh, it's not a hatchery. Sorry. It is a wild
7:12
There he goes. Cool. Well, it's pretty fun when you can find them, you know
7:19
Find the bait, find the fish. I knew there was fish here
7:23
I think there's bigger ones down there. It looks like there's some bigger ones
7:29
I don't really know. Let's see if we can get these guys
7:33
I jigged that guy in 140 feet of water. That's rare. Usually I'm only jigging in about 80
7:39
There's a little trick here. Especially in the ripping current right now
7:44
I'm pedaling to keep my jig vertical, straight down. It's not very easy
7:49
Now I'm on 154 feet. Okay, I'm at the bottom. I hope he does on something right away
7:58
Maybe there's a little rockfish or something. There we go. Yeah. There's something
8:09
Okay, that's not a salmon. This could be a ling. Got some weight to him
8:17
That's good. Oh no, my line got reeled out. That was a pretty good fish
8:27
Not bad. I side hooked him. He's got some weight. Let's see what we got here
8:35
It's gotta be a ling. The weight alone. He's just not fighting very hard
8:41
I must have got him on the side or something. He's not torquing me
8:45
Or I got a rockfish on the side or something. What is this? Cod
8:51
Oh, it could be a dog. He could be fighting like a dog
8:57
What is it? Oh, it's a fish. What is it? Oh my goodness
9:05
Oh my gosh. I've never caught one of these out here. Wow, a little flounder
9:11
A good size one too. A little sole. These are actually good eating
9:17
You can keep these. Look at that. That's cool. Ah, so no wonder it was fighting
9:25
It felt like a weird fight. It's just hard to explain. He's pretty thick
9:31
I don't want to hurt him. He's got some meat there. It's a good size sole
9:39
Not bad. Alright, we'll let him go. I don't want this guy though
9:47
There he goes. You gonna go bud? He got it pretty good
9:53
Hold on, is he gonna go? Oh, there he's going. That's pretty good
9:59
He's just figuring it out. He's like, what's happening here? He didn't know he was free
10:05
That was cool. A new species to add to the list here
10:09
I mean, I've caught those species before. I think that's the first time on a kayak I've caught one of those. Oh! Oh! Oh
10:19
Something chased it up from the bottom. Oh! I felt that. He probably took the tail
10:27
I should probably check my bait. Let's see the bait. Oh, that was crazy. Yeah
10:35
I felt it. It was reeling up. And I just got... Probably a lingcod coming up after it
10:43
Come on, big boys. Big money, big money, big money. Yeah. There he is
10:51
There he is. There he is. Oh, that's a good one. Oh, yeah
10:59
This is a really good one. This is a really good one
11:03
This might be it. Oh, shoot. No, I'm flying this. No! This might be it. Oh
11:15
Geez, well, it's okay. This guy's a keeper. Oh, he's close. He's close. I'm going to net him
11:23
He's going to be close. I'm going to net this guy
11:33
because I'm going to measure him. Sixty... Sixty centimeters to that guy
11:43
That's still a nice one, though. Beauty. All right, there we go
11:53
Let's put him away. Sixty centimeters. Not quite close, but no cigar, as they say
12:03
So I got an idea. I'm going to throw this little... Just to see how this works
12:09
This camera weighs about three to four ounces, so it's kind of like a weight
12:15
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to hook up my spoon
12:19
below the camera, and maybe we'll see some fish. I'm not going to fish deep, obviously
12:27
just like 30 feet, just to see what we can see. All right
12:39
All right. All right
13:39
All right. Well, that does it. That was the hardest grind I've done on the kayak yet. We..
13:51
Today was definitely lots of trial stuff where I was trying the go-fish camera
13:55
I was trying the trolling, I was committed to the trolling, the new setup with the braid
14:01
and the little... The little... The little... With the braid and the mono
14:11
upshot there. And what else did we do? Man, I was jigging a little bit for salmon
14:17
We got some of them juveniles, but nothing big. The current was ripping so hard, I don't know
14:23
I think the big guys were deeper today. So I don't think this was a..
14:27
It's a tougher condition today, but sometimes, hey, that's how it goes
14:31
But yeah, still some really good fish. So anyway, I am heading back in
14:37
