Hey, welcome back to the channel everyone
0:04
It's Jesse here from BC Fishing Journal. It is Sunrise and we are out on the water and we're going to do something a little different this morning
0:13
We are trolling for salmon, which is not different, but I'm going to use a dummy setup
0:17
So I, in the past, I've always used an inline flasher. This is the first time I've done this on a kayak, so this is going to be interesting
0:25
So I've just rigged something up pretty basic as to my own dummy flasher
0:29
and we'll see how it goes. I'm only out here for a couple hours so let's see how we do
0:33
Alright thanks for coming along and let's get at it. Woohoo! Some swells but it's calm no wind
0:51
So I'm gonna serve, I got a bunch of spoons here as you can see. Onchobies, silk green, that one's called, there's no bananas
0:59
Kingfisher spoon as well. And then, but I'm going to start with, I'm going to start with this guy
1:06
Is the herring aid. I actually have a herring aid flasher, but I'm going to use the Maddie flasher
1:14
So that's my main line. This is my leader line to my spoon
1:21
All right, so I got a six foot long leader there. It doesn't have to be that long
1:26
As per the usual, we're going to put a little. on our cannon bolt where it always goes on the clip here
1:38
And usually I, when you're doing an inline flasher, this would be a little line connector, this right here
1:45
But now I'm using this, see this, I got actually a little snap, so I'm going to connect it to the flasher
1:52
So this is going to be the flasher hanging back. So it's about two feet back
1:56
It might need to be longer, I don't know, I haven't. We're going to have to play around with that a little bit
2:01
But I'm just going to put this guy on here. There we go. Okay
2:07
So now we got the cannonball, the dummy flasher. Now this is where I connect the line
2:13
So this is going to go on to the downrigger line. It's going to snap onto the downrigger line
2:18
And then I'll connect this to my main line. So it's just going to be above the flasher
2:23
Alright, so let's do this. I'm going to drop this in just a few feet
2:32
Now this is where I'm not 100% sure. So first things first, I'll just show you in the water here
2:38
See if you can see it. You can see the flasher behind the..
2:47
See how the flasher is doing this thing? It's great. That's what you wanted to do that
2:52
That's what it can do it. Perfect. Now I'm going to make sure this thing does not tangle with this
2:59
So how do I do that? I have to create some distance between the line or off the line
3:05
Now, the thing is I want to be close though. I don't want it to be too far away either because you want the fish to come up
3:10
They come and look at the flasher. They think it's feeding salmon. So they want to know, hey, what's up there
3:15
And so I got to keep it, you know, that's probably the tricky part I have to figure out
3:19
I don't know the exact style of anything. So I'm thinking maybe like..
3:24
five feet something like that above. That's like the gas estimate. I don't know
3:33
So I'm going to go down, one, two, two. Maybe not even five feet. I'm going to do four. I'm going to try four. If it tangles, it tangles, I'll figure that out. But at least we know we're kind of in
3:54
his own. So this is going to go on like this. This guy here, oh this is on nice, it's
4:02
on this. It clips on like that. So, nice. And just as usual, this just clips onto my main line
4:10
Now because we're going really close to that flasher, I can actually just put this right above
4:15
the lead line because they're six feet back. So it's kind of like the space between the
4:20
flasher to the like one of my, was that the obtuse angle. When you're a few, you're
4:24
figure out your distance between the three triangle points. Anyway, I'm dropping right now
4:33
It is 5 o'clock in the morning. I'll draw this on a diagram
4:37
You can all easier for all of us. Put it on PCfishing journal.com
4:42
Check it out. Okay. So let's just have a look and see how this looks when I'm..
4:50
See, I can see the connector. I'm going to drop this down just a little bit
5:00
I'm going to roll with it just to see how she looks
5:05
See, I can see that the flash is low enough that it can't get to..
5:10
That's not bad. I can see the spoon there, the flasher here, that's not too bad
5:15
It's like maybe a couple extra feet than if you're using the inline one, maybe probably eight feet
5:21
So that looks alright. if I stop. So when I'm moving it looks good, but if I stop, the flasher tends to float up a
5:30
lower, right? And the spoon will maybe sink, so there is a chance that you have to be careful
5:35
that when you're, you got to keep some ocean with you. Then when that happens, you're, uh, you're giving
5:40
risk to, uh, tango. All right, let's do this. Let's go down to two
5:52
I can see the cannonball my sounder but I know it definitely Okay Now we fishing
6:13
And now we're fishing. We're fishing 130 feet of water
6:26
And we're at 65. And we're at 65, give a take. Not saying little caho
7:05
Here you are you. Where are you? Where are you
7:15
What are ya? Carry yourself, I'm Fred. Let's see, what we got it
8:00
All right, bud, I'll get you off, don't worry. Okay, let's put this in here
8:10
Let's let our hands a bit. Alright, buddy, let's how we look at you
8:18
I'll let you go, don't worry. Yeah, so little Jack, Chinook. Beautiful fish, all, hey
8:29
Look that, here. It's a wild. That's nice, hey? It's a good looking fish. Alright
8:39
There goes. Good start. Get the slime on the board. All right, well, there are we called the Domi Flasher
8:47
Dummy flasher. That's cool
9:01
That's the first one for the dummy flasher. I'm sweating already. That sun is like great
9:08
You know what that is? That is a smell of victory, ladies and gentlemen
9:15
I tell me salmon slime. Nothing better. I love that smell. So the thing that makes me happy about this is like
9:24
the reason why this is important is it's a proven, it proves that it worked
9:29
Like I wasn't sure, like, you know, again, how high to put it up. And you start to, you know, if you don't catch fish
9:35
you start to second guess everything, right? You're like, oh, change everything. And as an angler, man, that will play on your mind when you're having a tough day
9:43
and anyway so that getting that fish right away is actually really helpful for me for my confidence
9:50
with this setup with the dummy setup because I wasn't sure right like I like I was thinking to
9:55
myself already I was like if I don't get a fish in the first hour I'm going back to the inline
9:59
flasher like that's the way my brain's thinking I don't know if you guys are like that
10:03
anyway that's what I was thinking but I'm glad to see that because then at least I know it's
10:09
it's putting it in the right place in the zone so that's good
10:43
Super small. What we got here? Got a coal
10:56
I think the short boy is digging out. If I get a keeper, that'd be awesome
11:06
I'll let them to stay there. There's steam, huh? Oh geez, there we go
11:20
Always awake. A little bigger. That's good. Maybe it's a keeper cold
11:31
There we go. There we go. I always waking up. So I wanted to get my cannonball line. That's the worst
11:42
That's the worst, which you don't want. Oh, that was the worst
11:49
Oh, geez. Oh, geez. Oh, geez. Oh, geez. Oh, that was a lot
11:58
Oh, that was the worst net job ever. Oh, ho. I missed my three times
12:05
All right, what I got here? Oh, that's a... Look at all the least
12:10
Lice on this guy. Oh, gee-diner. Oh, there's a spoon. Ah. There it is
12:16
It is. It is a grenade. Let's see what we got here
12:22
Looks like a... This is a pink? Come on a second here
12:29
It is a pink. Okay, so it's a big pink salmon. Oh man. Interesting
12:35
Well, I can bonk one of these guys. It's the first one I've caught on the kayak
12:40
That's interesting. But I was actually going to smoke these guys. Okay, so we got some pinks here. That's cool
12:52
That's a good size pink actually. Not a bad one, eh? Let's have a look here. Not bad
13:01
Look at all the sea lights on this guy. So this is a pink salmon, not the desired species
13:11
They have the small scales and all the spotted tail right there
13:18
I'll keep it. I'm going to smoke this guy. I'll smoke them
13:22
All right, let's do this quick. Nice. Any night
13:35
All right, Pinky. You're going. I'll bleed them real quick
13:51
Okay, right in the pass here. Fought pretty good
14:13
You fought pretty good. Not bad, not bad. Couple little decent pulls
14:19
My drag was pretty tight. So I'm pretty, not bad there, a little pinky
14:27
Alright, first pink. It's pink in the kayak. Nice, eh? Nice little four pounder or so, maybe three, four pounds
14:39
It's nice, nice meat for sure. These guys I love in the smoker
14:47
I don't know if you've ever done that, but it is good. If you're gonna eat these guys
14:53
barbecue them, the damn. But they don't do well. Their meat is very mild so it's, um, not so you don't want to
15:03
like, you don't want to freeze these guys. They don't do well on the freezer
15:07
Let me tell you. I don't age it. Oh godana there's a big whale right in front of me
15:19
there's a whale right here look at them there's a whale he's right there he's right here he must be chasing gait so cool
15:34
just came up twice oh my gosh this place littered with life right now. So there's a nice gray whale surfacing right back
15:46
behind me here. My camera died. Flippin unbelievable. It's just gorgeous. Oh, oh
16:09
Oh, okay. A little shaker
16:21
Where are you? Where are you? Where are you? It's going real easy
16:34
I'm throwing them long here. Oh, it could be, I think
16:44
Oh, green. Green. There's another thing. There's another thing
16:54
There's another creep. All right. Oh
17:05
Hold on, hold on, I'm gonna My... I'm gonna... Yeah, it's a plane
17:16
Oh, it's gonna take now, this. Alright. Let's get my hook out. Uh..
17:30
Yep, I'll pick seven. Well, this is a good side. All right, we're filling the smoker, everybody. We're filling the smoker
17:37
There it is There the pink right there Alright alright let keep going
19:14
All right. Never want them in front of your kayak
19:27
That's the... I'll follow it down, I never want them in front
19:32
It's got to be a little snook shaker. If it's a cold will all be tickled pink
19:54
Let's see what we've got here. It is a... another pink. Alright, we'll take it
20:03
The middle limit. This is a smaller one. Hey guys
20:21
Good, you guys? Anything but pinks
20:41
Have you caught anything but pinks? Have you caught anything but pinks? Not a whole lot, two? Yeah? Three. Hmm
21:19
Alright, so we had a little mishap. We tangled actually, it wasn't a fish. I actually tangled my flasher with the line, just as you want to avoid doing
21:27
I did exactly that. And so it broke the line. I lost the flasher, which is a shame
21:38
So now we're back to inline flasher for now. So I might have to go a little higher than I was
21:45
But, oh well, living therein, right? That's what we're here for, we're here to learn
21:51
All right. Well, I am my workout today, Althea. We're just about to pull back into Piper's lagoon
22:00
Oh, I'm sweating. Thanks for watching, guys. Today was a good day
22:06
Challenges as usual on the kayak. We got to use the dummy flasters, which was awesome, and it worked until they tangled and it didn't work
22:13
It broke that off. That was too bad. that flasher but you know part of fishing so I lose gear I might I might bump up
22:24
that line just a little higher than I did maybe another foot or two so the spoon
22:30
must have dropped down into the dummy flasher that's the only thing I can think of
22:33
I'm not sure how that happened but maybe I wasn't maintaining that speed it's
22:37
possible just something to think about when you're running that line you got to do
22:41
that other than that it was great the pinks are out Finks are in full force now in the Nima here, so they made their way down here
22:50
But thanks so much for watching guys. And have any questions, feel free to drop them down below, have to answer those
22:58
And yeah, if you like this video, please give me a thumbs up
23:02
Appreciate that. Helps me, helps this channel, and we'll see you in the next one. Woo
23:09
I'm tired. We've got to clean some fish. Get the smoker going
23:14
pinks will be smoked oh yes they will be smoked oh yes they will be smoked
